FROM THE RESEARCH

Key Insights.png

The Research went into five rounds: 01, the existing condition of world cultural heritage. 02, What forms of sensory reception can make people aware of cultural factors efficiently & effectively? 03, What visual cultural elements are we likely to be exposed to daily? 04,What pain points block people from discovering more about cultural & historical heritage through graphic patterns?  05, Competitive analysis. Below are the four most important insights.

01.  The focus of life determines most exploration behaviors because it requires effort unless they are especially interested.

Unique visual graphics can indeed grab above 70% of people's attention, but less than 10% of people would like to take the initiative to explore, except the professionals associated with graphic patterns. Because people are busy with other life focus.

02.   Lack of efficient access to relevant information behind a cultural & historical pattern lead to poor cultural awareness.

Above 90% professionals reveals that they have to pay a lot of hard work to search for historical and cultural information behind new cultural graphics, let alone non-professionals.

03.   Cultural context is important to form deep feelings of cultural & historical heritage effectively.

95% of people believe that traveling can get a deeper cultural & historical experience than simply browsing the Internet because the interaction with the environment is more immersive.

04.  The correct use of cultural heritage in business is crucial. Because it can greatly integrate into people's lives by increasing exposure to cultural heritage.

However, there are many articles and studies indicating that the misappropriation of cultural heritage in business is common, which is not conducive to the cultural transmission.

NARROW DOWN THE SCOPE

VERIFY FROM THE PEOPLE

There are total 6 people who participated in the interview.

Questions:

1, From this image,  what captures your attention most?

2, What Information do you get from this symbol?

3, How do you feel if I tell you this is a gothic graphic symbol? What is in your mind?

4, Where you've seen the similar patterns if you could recall?

Questions:

1, Could you describe the different information the two patterns convey to you?

2, Where you've seen the similar patterns if you could recall?

3, How do you understand cultural heritage and the relation with pattern?

04, Identify the pain points that block people from discovering more about cultural & historical heritage through graphic patterns.

There are 10 people (6 non-cultural professionals and 4 cultural professionals) through in-person or Zoom interviews. The synthesized KEY INSIGHTS are shown in the first session.

Insights from non-cultural workers

Easy access to cultural information on cultural graphics is the key for non-cultural workers to explore cultural patterns and cultural heritage.

- The density of contact with cultural graphics in daily life, and the corresponding sense of ritual or memorable experience is the most effective way for people to obtain cultural information, such as traveling to a historical tourist spot.

- The uniqueness, artistry, innovation, richness, and metaphor of cultural patterns are essential attracting factors.

- Communities with cultural activities can help people explore cultural patterns and related information. However, most cultural communities are targeted at specific groups of people with religious natures but not for educational purposes.

- Finding an embedding point to let cultural heritage play a role in people’s daily life is essential because most non-cultural professionals are busy with other life focus and cannot put their energy into pattern discovery.

Insights from cultural professionals

- A reliable pattern library can significantly help designers, planners, and other cultural workers because they are not trained in visual pattern identification. They only do cultural pattern research when needed for a specific project, which is time-consuming and doesn't necessarily apply what they researched to future other projects.

- The protection of cultural patterns and related innovations are equally important. The key is creating a mechanism to reasonably apply and convey cultural information and balance the relationship with the business needs.

- Building a healthy cultural network that benefits public cultural awareness as well as businesses is crucial.

- Misappropriation of the cultural pattern is common in business use, but it harms cultural communication.

- Cultural workers also need a positive, monetizable incentive platform that doesn't only benefit big institutions but also individuals. Otherwise, it may lead to deliberate disregard of the authenticity of cultural information and commercial-driven cultural misappropriation and abuse.

Thinking

Why the platforms mainly working on authoritative information are all nonprofit?

Because there’s not that much needs for cultural & art authoritative information in the market. They can only exist as a platform for cultural popularization.

Reflection & Question:

However, all the previous research reflects that the public mass has few opportunities to touch diverse cultural & historical heritage daily. With the current business participation situation, that is a destructive cycle. There must be a way to increase the exposure of historical & cultural heritage in the public masses' lives. Involving businesses smartly could be a solution, especially the kind of business closely integrated with the public masses' daily lives.  However, from a business perspective, what can also benefit businesses from cultural & historical heritage to shape a positive cycle?

Research_Patten Leap

The Answer:

In Paris, everyone prides themselves on knowing the art and philosophy. Culture and art have obviously been integrated into their lives.

Similarly, for businesses, respecting culture is an attitude, which does not mean they have to do things related to cultural and historical heritage. This kind of respect shows the social responsibility of a responsible enterprise, which will bring positive impacts.

If creating another cultural layer in the city by using the graphic pattern as the embedding point, let the business connect with it, and use it as an entrance and easy access for the public to explore culture through contact with the businesses in their daily lives. This can expand business opportunities and attract more customers and allow the public mass to explore the cultural information behind the patterns. Over time, society can form a sense of self-confidence and respect based on the recognition of historical and cultural heritage.

Different focus between desktop design & mobile phone design.

-
The desktop design has a better editing function than the mobile phone design. It adds "Codepad" for editing patterns by scripting. It also provides more editing tools than mobile phone design.

- The desktop design utilizes the advantage of a large screen. It allows users to browse more pictures within the same time frame.

- The mobile phone design is more focused on flexibility. It connects with a smartphone camera for quick pattern searching and capturing.

- Both of the designs contain a map function. However, the mobile phone can use the camera to scan QR codes for more information.
